Introducing Cognitive Frames
A new journal of film critique and cultural conversation
We're thrilled to introduce Cognitive Frames, a new journal of film critique and cultural conversation from the Cognitive Film Society.
Cognitive Frames is dedicated to thoughtful, passionate explorations of cinema's endless conversations with literature, art, history, and our lives. We aim to venture beyond conventional reviews to examine how movies reflect and reshape our understanding of the world.

Our writers—both established voices and emerging talents—will dive into the currents that run beneath the surface of the films we love, revealing unexpected connections and illuminating new perspectives.
Our inaugural essay, "The Demon's Seductive Embrace," reveals surprising connections between Jane Austen and Dostoevsky, tracking their influence through Weimar expressionism to acclaimed contemporary works by Sean Baker and Lee Chang-dong.
You'll discover how these artistic visions share unexpected DNA, illuminating why films like "Burning" and "Red Rocket" resonate so powerfully today. Don't miss this first installment in what promises to be an exciting exploration of cinema's hidden conversations.

Each new piece will offer similar journeys through cinema's rich landscape, inviting you to see familiar films in new light and discover overlooked treasures.
In the coming weeks, look for pieces exploring 1950s cinema—from post-war Japanese masterpieces to Chuck Jones's revolutionary animation and the science fiction that defined the era.
As we prepare for our June 5th screening of Hitchcock's "Rear Window" at the Gold Theater, these essays will provide context that enhances your viewing experience.
Cognitive Frames aims to capture the joy of those post-movie conversations that spill out into the night, when insights and observations flow freely among friends. We believe that understanding cinema's rich tapestry deepens our appreciation for both classics and new works alike.
We welcome you to this ongoing conversation about the art form we all love. Your voice matters too—we encourage comments, questions, and suggestions for topics you'd like to see explored.
With excitement for the journey ahead,
The Cognitive Film Society
