Kinda loved this sweet/sleazy look at young single life in disillusioned early 1970s Chicago.
Peter Boyle and Candice Bergen have a crazy & bizarre chemistry. I don’t think I’ve ever seen James Caan this vulnerable.
This is in many ways the beginning of the world that has just ended. The businessmen who develop slums are back in charge. Chicago is so cold and modern and crowded - and certainly doesn’t make office life seem appealing or human (Tati influences abound here).
But let’s be real - Candace Bergen is so good here and drives this film. She’s so talented and beautiful and funny that all of her cutting remarks completely hit.
This really is an underrated and under-seen film that somehow speaks so strongly to our current lonely moment.
Kudos Fun City for this restoration
