Siodmak by way of Douglas Sirk! This is not the best script or most interesting story, but for a melodrama about a wealthy scion who flees his (checks notes) seafaring life to compose and play piano? Siodmak's signature style elevates what feels a lot like ersatz Zweig.
I can't help but enjoy the great use of light and shadow...
All credit to Film at Lincoln Center for introducing me to his work...
