Sweden was not prepared for 70’s Elliot Gould energy. Bibi Anderson is wonderful in this film and Max Von Sydow never misses as curmudgeonly cuckold (Woody Allen really just lifted a lot of Bergman whole cloth huh?).
This isn’t as brilliant as most of Bergman’s best - but it is a strong film about how cultural differences and guilt can drive strange attractions and obsessions.
Sven Nykist could shoot the hell out of a film.
