One of Bergman’s more mean spirited films. Everyone here is practically irredeemable, and incapable of actual human kindness. Everyone is utterly humiliated by the whole affair.
The Rite is indecent, of course. As is the attempt to make it illegal. Bergman does a good job of showing the inhumanity inherent in both “sides”, but humiliation is just a tough theme to connect with.
