Even those cold of emotion deserve love. This is a strange and beautiful film about people who may never truly be able to let go of their calculations and embrace their full humanity. Even when surrounded by some of nature’s most beautiful scenery - the level of controlled reserve goes well beyond bourgeois propriety and into repression.
And yet the emotions and humanity remain. And despite their denial, there is some hope at the end for comfort and grace.
Lean’s films are always so sumptuous. The contrast here with the characters make it all the more defined. Truly a classic of the melodrama genre.
