In 10 years, when revivals of "The Bride" on a new 35mm print are selling out at the Paris and the Vista and the New Beverly, there will be many, many people who claimed they saw it and loved it when it first came out.
Consider this Letterboxd review my receipt.
I'm positive that this movie is not for everyone. There will be many people who cannot take a beautifully shot, meta commentary on the Frankenstein myth, how it was defined and influenced and implanted into the culture through movies -- through a feminist lens.
They may not love an ultra stylized, historical gangster chase epic, influenced deeply by "Dick Tracy". And I'm absolutely positive that a reference to Marlene Dietrich in "The Blue Angel" is going to either fly over the head or alienate your average TikTok user.
But let me put my stake in the ground that this film is a cult classic in the making. You should see its craziness on the big screen while you can. I'd rather see 100 messy films with huge ideas like this, than one more boring Marvel slopfest.
Long live the Bride!
