A failure on every level, in every way that’s possible for an adaptation to fail. Most importantly, this film looks awful. The CGI landscapes are considerably less impressive than the Assassins Creed video game set in Paris.
The singing is beyond thin. Hugh Jackman performs Valjean with an Irish accent? Russell Crowe cannot sing. Anne Hathaway cannot act. Amanda Seyfried gives the same performance as the cartoon bird in Cinderella. Even Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter seem mostly bored.
There is more life and action in the filmed concert of Les Mis, than this “movie”.
I would normally give something this bad 2 stars because of the effort involved in the production. But I love Les Mis so much, and this is so incredibly awful, I can’t even bring myself to extend that kindness.
Avoid at all costs.
