Jean de Florette, 1986 - ★★★★½

I watched this film on a CRT tv over 4 days in Madame P’s 8th grade French class - and I did not get it at all. Although I was super pleased to get the Simpsons reference during the infamous exchange student episode.

In 1990, my understanding of the romantic yearning for provincial France and the evil that greedy, small minded men do for the most banal reasons possible was -- limited.

This is an immensely sad film - which is matched by its beauty. The new Criterion 4K is reference level.

An incredible revisit to what must’ve been my first French film ever.
