Honestly was not expecting such a strong statement against fascism from Wes Anderson’s stop-motion Japanese dog movie. This movie is great for so many reasons - the incredibly beautiful animation, the many Japanese film references, the mid-Sixties technology, the Lady and the Tramp allusions! - but it’s such a great deconstruction of how dumb authoritarianism is.
All of its stupidity is on display here - from the bullying demagogue, to the masked cops, to the moronic propaganda - Wes Anderson nails them completely.
Whatever happened to man’s best friend indeed.
The great Wes Anderson rewatch #2
