Ennui is a powerful and dangerous drug. It’s almost admirable the way Rohmer’s characters can rationalize the unsettled anxiety they inflict upon each other, and then always be surprised at their profound loneliness.
Anyone in a relationship knows one must keep a private space or personal interests to keep sane. But there are obvious lines. Louise knows very well what keeping her apartment means for and for Remi.
Or as my good friend likes to say - when you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes.
