Old or new, men never change. An oft overlooked masterpiece from Ozu, Early Spring is the story of an affair - but broadens its aperture to look at all of the many issues plaguing the Japanese salaryman.
Ozu lets us live with this couple and their community until you feel the weight of their decisions. By the devastating last scene - it’s as if you’ve known them forever.
In many ways this film is as beautiful to look at as Tokyo Story and for contemporary audiences might be more relevant and compelling. The fragile male ego never goes out of style.
Amazing stuff!
