This demented variation on Wild Strawberries is low-key one of Woody’s best. This might be his meanest film towards himself and his usual obsessions. So many incredible cameos and performances from a generation’s worth of acting talent.
Bergman may have a lock on deep explorations of god’s absence and its implications on human relationships. But Woody is no less deep for couching it all in wise cracks, borscht belt humor, vulgarity and the best Bar Mitzvah send up in cinema.
A vastly underrated masterpiece. All of Woody’s films should be remastered in 4K - but this one in particular.
