Fukasaku's documentary style is disorienting, but by the time the film ends - I totally got it.
How else could these destroyed, traumatized men respond to the horrible world they were presented with? Post-war Japan -- defeated, nuked, lied to and impoverished was no place for codes of honor or human decency.
And yet -- some humanity remains. Hirono in particular holds onto it, no matter what.
Looking forward to the rest of this series. I see why people lose their minds over Fukasaku.
