Jodie Foster gives her most entertaining performance in years in Rebecca Zlotowski’s off-kilter murder mystery. Beyond fluent, Foster embodies the role of the American ex-pat Freudian analyst who is just out of step with her adopted town.
A Private Life feels extremely lived in, and reminded me of both Woody Allen and Jacques Audiard in terms of tone and urban character building.
The film also has many wickedly funny moments - which allow Foster to show off comedic timing and vulnerability we don’t often see in her roles.
*Got to see this at the North American premiere at New York Film Festival. Rebecca Zlotowski and Jodie Foster’s Q&A was so charming and entertaining. I hope we get to see more films from them together in the future
