
Wadja was 27 when he made this! What an absolute achievement of humanist/realist cinema.
Very reminiscent of Rossellini’s “War Trilogy” - with the rubble of the Blitz still highly visible everywhere in the streets.
Still you see the eyes of Stach change and get less “keen” and more intense, as the Nazi occupation becomes his more direct struggle.
With fascism (or whatever you might call it) on the march once more - seeing the Nazi criminals for what they are, is even more horrific.
